The Black Hour host featured on KPFA's Morning Show

The Black Hour host Reginald "Brother Reggie" James appeared on KPFA’s (94.1) Morning Show along with Global Exchange’s Monica Vaughan on Feb. 27.

"Reginald and Monica highlighted the importance of social justice and diverse youth voices in getting both national and international policies passed to combat climate change," according to Global Exchange's blog.

TBH News: Laney students headed to Powershift in D.C.

Over 10,000 students and youth are headed to the Nation's Capitol for a historic youth summit on Climate Change, Powershift.

Two Laney College students will be among the thousands attending this year's Powershift.

Tiana Drisker is a nursing student who also works part-time at Communities for a Better Environment (CBE). Tiana was a registered Dental Assistant with one-year of experience when she enrolled received an AA in Liberal Arts from Laney College. She kept on working through her degree, splitting time between her role as a registered dental assistant, student, and EOPS student aid. Most recently, she has been able to utilize her 6+ years experience as an Instructor at Western Career College’s Dental Assistant Program. She has also been involved with the Sustainable Peralta effort.

The second student is non-other than Reginald James, aka Brother Reggie, Executive Producer of The Black Hour. James initiated the Peralta EasyPass program that gives full-time students semester-long unlimited ride bus passes for $50 per semester.

He currently interns at AC Transit in External Affairs. James also serves as Managing Editor of the Harambee Newspaper (http://www.harambeenews.com) where he writes the column, "Red, Black & GREEN."

Both Drisker and James received scholarships to attend from Global Exchange, an international human rights organization based in San Francisco that focuses on social, economic and environmental justice.

The summit, being organized by the Energy Action Coalition and a network of other organizations, will have numerous workshops and sessions focusing on building a new economy based on renewable energy. Students will also participate in lobbying congress on March 2.

Reginald James (aka Brother Reggie), host of The Black Hour, spoke during Laney College professor Mark Rauzon's Geography classes for the National Teach-In on Climate Change. James, an intern at AC Transit discussed carbon emissions, environmental racism and environmental justice, and how students can be involved in the fight against Climate Change.

TBH News: Former BART cops gets bail

Protestors enraged, nine arrested
Former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle, who killed the unarmed Oscar Grant III, meant to fire his taser and not his gun, according to his defense attorney who convinced a judge to set bail Jan. 30. He remained in jail through Friday night, according to the County Sheriff's Department, despite reports that he was released.

A few dozen people packed the Alameda County Courthouse lobby Friday afternoon for the bail hearing's 43 available seats while hundreds more protested outside the courthouse. Inside the courtroom, the front rows were reserved for the families of both Grant and Mehserle.

In Keeping with the tradition of Kwanzaa, everyone is encouraged to bring something to eat to share (no pork please).

Kwanzaa is an African American Holiday based on the African agricultural celebrations and collective principles, which contribute to the unity and development of the African Community. It was created by Maulana Karenga in 1966. Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday observed from December 26 through January 1.

The BAY AREA KWANZAA COMMITTEE is an organization representing various Houses of Kwanzaa that have been celebrating Kwanzaa for over 20 years. The Black Hour LIVE, December 19 at 3 p.m.

The Black Hour internet radio show will air live on 9th Floor Radio Friday, December 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m (PST).

Co-Hosts Brother Reggie and Drea Mos will end the show's second season with a fantastic show, feating discussions on politics, education, music, arts, culture and health. Also, tips on how to survive in tough economic times, and hope to get you through the cold winter.

Guests include Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, who will discuss his experiences as an elected official.

Second Annual Stanley 'Tookie' Williams Legacy Summit

The second annual Stanley 'Tookie' Williams Legacy Summit was held at Merritt College December 13 in the Huey P. Newton/Bobby Seale Lounge.

The summit honored a man who made a major transition in his life, from being a co-founder of the Los Angeles' Crips to becoming an Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and sought to prevent street violence and stop the racist implementation of the death penalty in the United States.

There were over 300 people in attendance, including many former Black Panthers, and other activists. After a hearing, featuring exerpts of written testimony from people on Death Row, and panel was held. Panelists included former Black Panther Party Chairperson Elaine Brown, San Francisco's Nation of Islam Minister Christopher Muhammad, Chicago Professor Bill Ayers, Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, and more.

TBH News: California heading 'toward financial armageddon'

California is heading 'toward financial Armageddon' according to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. During a press conference Wednesday, he said the State's budget deficit is now $15 billion for the current year.

Criticizing the Legislature for failure to address the crisis, he projects the budget shortfall will be $40 billion.
